Oktoberfest beer festival
Bicentennial 1810-2010
On October 12th, 1810 the crown prince
Ludwig (who became later King Ludwig I. of Bavaria)
celebrated his marriage to Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen.
All citizens of Munich were invited to the celebrations,
which took place on a grassland lying that time in front
of the town gates. Since than, in honour of the bride,
this place is called "Theresienwiese".
In the next coming years they repeated the celebration,
which has been extended and rescheduled to the earlier
and warmer September, which allowed to stand longer
out in the open. However the last Oktoberfest weekend
is still in October.
In the meantime the "Wiesn" is the largest folk festival
of the world and will be held on the Theresienwiese again.
